A dog that spotted a tumour in its owner's neck before being stolen has been returned home.

Martin Kelly from Buckhurst Hill, Essex, said English bull terrier Monty kept licking one spot on his neck.

Mr Kelly was diagnosed with throat cancer before his pet went missing while they were out for a walk.

Monty was found months later by police at a property in Tiptree, more than 30 miles (48km) from home.

His owners posted an appeal on a website called DogLost, which resulted in a call saying he was possibly in a village near Tiptree.

"It is clear that he is a very much loved member of the family," said PC Joe Self, one of the officers who helped to find Monty.

"It was fantastic to see Monty back in his rightful home - you could even see that he was returning to his old habits straight away, as he was searching for his ball as soon as he got through the door."
