Standoff after police officer shot in Louisiana, state authorities say Two dead including police officer after Lousiana stabbing and shooting
(about 4 hours later)
Louisiana police say they are in a standoff with an accused shooter after a police officer was shot in south-western Louisiana. A sheriff has said two people including a police officer are dead in south-west Louisiana after a domestic dispute in which three people were stabbed, an officer who responded was shot and the suspected assailant then barricaded himself inside a store.
Sheriff Bobby Guidroz told reporters in Sunset the accused attacker had barricaded himself inside a gas station and that Swat officers were in the process of coaxing him out. Officers threw in tear gas and then stormed the JR Food Mart and arrested the suspect, 35-year-old Harrison Lee Wiley Jr, after he had refused to come out.
“Were gonna shoot another burst of teargas inside, we’re not gonna stand here all night and beg him to come out,” Guidroz said. St Landry parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said the deceased were 51-year-old officer Henry Nelson and 40-year-old Shameka Johnson. Two other women were stabbed: Johnson’s sister, 34-year-old Shurlay Johnson, and Courtney Jolivette, the wife of the suspect.
Two people were stabbed about three blocks from the gas station, Guidroz said, and the officer was shot when responding to that scene. The accused attacker then drove into the gas station, and barricaded himself inside an inner office. Guidroz said did not identify the man, who drove his car into a nearby convenience store in Sunset, about 70 miles west of Baton Rouge, on Wednesday and barricaded himself inside. The stabbings had taken place about three blocks from the gas station, Guidroz said.
Three people inside the store, a clerk, a cook and a customer, made it out safely, Guidroz said. Three people inside the store a clerk, a cook and a customer made it out safely, Guidroz said.
State police superintendent Mike Edmonson said the officer was “responsive” but he had no details on the extent of the officer’s injuries or those of the other two people who were shot. Sunset is a town of about 2,900 in St Landry Parish, 13 miles north of Lafayette.
A local ambulance company said it had eight ambulances and three helicopters responding to the scene.
