Premier League: Everton v Manchester United – live! Premier League: Everton v Manchester United – live!
(35 minutes later)
3.43pm BST15:43
43 min: Everton were absolutely cut to ribbons then. Stones stepped up to play offside, and Rooney got clear down the right. His cutback for Martial was good, but it looked as though Martial didn’t quite get hold of his shot, and a combination of recovering Everton defenders just about managed to block. Nervy moments: that could easily have been three.
Updated at 3.43pm BST
3.41pm BST15:41
41 min: Naismith doesn’t have an excess of skill, but he’s willing, at least, and he gets Everton moving with some doughty work down the left. United can’t clear, but Jagielka, in an advanced position, overhits his cross. Or maybe it was a shot.
Here’s Manoj Joseph: “Has Rooney completed a single pass in the last 10 minutes? If so, I’ve missed it. Perhaps it’s time to accept that he is over the hill.”
3.38pm BST15:38
38 min: Roberto Martinez looks somewhat pained on the touchline. United have settled into a more defensive shape after that second goal, but Everton haven’t really troubled them at all.
3.37pm BST15:37
36 min: Galloway got the better of Mata down the left, and put a lovely cross in, but Smalling did very well to come across the defender. Corner to Everton, but Naismith is called for a foul on Rooney in the six-yard box. Not a great deal in that, I don’t think.
3.35pm BST15:35
34 min: I reckon Schweinsteiger has been the best player on the pitch so far: he really knows how to pass. He’s making United sing. Everton look sad.
3.34pm BST15:34
33 min: Galloway is an admirable player, and he’s done so well since coming in, but he’s a centre-back, really, isn’t he? Everton have had almost nothing out wide. They’ve been really disappointing. United back to defend in numbers, and Everton’s attack peters out.
3.32pm BST15:32
31 min: Jones is back on. He’s hard as nails, isn’t he?! Rojo looks for Rooney, but Stones is in quickly. Then McCarthy, who I think is a right snide sometimes, is late on Schweinsteiger. That should have been yellow.
3.31pm BST15:31
31 min: I mentioned Lennon being quiet, but Coleman has hardly attacked at all this half. Maybe he’s not fully fit. Ha! As I was typing that, Coleman put in his first cross of the game, and although De Gea was favourite to win it – it wasn’t a great ball in – Lukaku got up higher, and there was panic in the United defence for a moment. No one in blue could win the second ball, though.
Jones is really bleeding heavily. Will he be able to continue?
3.28pm BST15:28
29 min: United look very comfortable. Martial goes down the right for the first time, but he can’t keep it in. Meanwhile, Phil Jones has gone to the touchline with a bloody nose. It’s like Terry Butcher all over again.
3.27pm BST15:27
26 min: Everton supporters should be thoroughly depressed: they just haven’t got going. Aaron Lennon, making his first Premier League start of the season, has been quiet.
3.25pm BST15:25
24 min: Coleman, incidentally, was booked during that passage of play: it was a crude foul on Martial, but Moss did very well to let play flow. Everton can’t get a grip, and Goodison is very quiet.
3.23pm BST15:23
23 min: Coleman dived in foolishly on Martial, but Jon Moss played a good advantage, because Rojo was completely free down the left. His cross was measured, and Herrera arrived late and pushed a lovely header past Howard into the corner. Much too easy. Everton have been crap so far.
3.22pm BST15:22
GOAL! Everton 0-2 Manchester United (Herrera 22)
Great goal.
Updated at 3.34pm BST
3.21pm BST15:21
21 min: Everton are being out-passed in midfield. Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger and Herrera have the measure at the moment. Stones looks for Galloway on the left, but it’s out of play.
3.19pm BST15:19
19 min: What a soft goal to concede from Everton’s POV. United’s corner was half-cleared by Naismith, but then United headed it back it, it bobbled around, and fell to Schneiderlin, who was free, in acres of space, on the right hand, and he cushioned a shot very nicely into the far corner. Howard, predictably, never looked like saving it. Game on!

GOAL! Everton 0-1 Manchester United (Schneiderlin 18)
United lead!
3.16pm BST15:16
16 min: Davie Provan on commentary wonders whether United might be a little short in midfield if they turn the ball over in Everton’s half. Herrera has started in a pretty advanced position. Opportunities for Everton on the counter-attack?
3.14pm BST15:14
14 min: Much better from Everton: they’ve got on the ball in these past five minutes, and have pushed United back somewhat. No real scoring chances so far, however.
3.13pm BST15:13
13 min: Lukaku takes it – it’s deflected. Corner. It’s a waste.
3.12pm BST15:12
12 min: Naismith, who is not everyone’s cup of tea, but has a knack of scoring in big games and who has started effectively here, is fouled about 30 yards out. It’s within range for Barkley. No Leighton Baines, though.
Updated at 3.22pm BST
3.10pm BST15:10
11 min: Everton look long for Lukaku, and there was a suspicion that Smalling was wrestling, rather than defending, right on the edge of the box. No free kick, though.
Here’s Nathan Human: “It would appear that record breaking Wayne is now Schrödinger’s Footballer in that he is both a “top top player” and simultaneously “fat and overrated” . His true state is only decided by who looks at him, if it’s an ex-player or majority of the press, he is the former, for pretty much everyone else he is the latter.”
3.09pm BST15:093.09pm BST15:09
9 min: Darmian, who scored for Italy against Azerbaijan in midweek, and who I think is going to be a fine outside-back, goes clear down the right, and fizzes one across the six-yard box. No one there for United, though.9 min: Darmian, who scored for Italy against Azerbaijan in midweek, and who I think is going to be a fine outside-back, goes clear down the right, and fizzes one across the six-yard box. 7 min: Everton haven’t been able to get Lukaku into the game yet, and McCarthy and Barry have had to do plenty of defensive work. But that’s better! Naismith looks for Lukaku through the middle, but Smalling and De Gea did well to ease him out. I think Martinez will want to utilize Lukaku on the counter-attack, but United are in control so far.7 min: Everton haven’t been able to get Lukaku into the game yet, and McCarthy and Barry have had to do plenty of defensive work. Wayne Rooney’s goal return this season has been, shall we say, modest. Rooney has only one goal in the Premier League, and has not registered away in the competition for 11 months. He’s still only 29, but is he cooked? That’s today’s hot topic. Email me!Wayne Rooney’s goal return this season has been, shall we say, modest. So John Stones and Seamus Coleman return for Everton, and Aaron Lennon replaces Gerard Deulofeu in attack. Ander Herrera plays in midfield with Schweini and Schneidi, and Memphis Depay and Daley Blind drop to the bench. Maybe Louis van Gaal saw his former team Holland play in midweek, and benched them in disgust. Some sad news this morning: Howard Kendall has died aged 69. The grief will be keenly felt at Goodison: Kendall was probably their best ever manager, winning two titles in the 1980s, and appearing more than 200 times as a player, starring in that famous midfield with Colin Harvey and Alan Ball. The Holy Trinity, they called them. Maybe Everton’s best ever trio in the centre of the pitch. Some sad news this morning: Howard Kendall has died aged 69. Hello and welcomeHello and welcome
It wasn’t so long ago that Manchester United were so dominant against Everton that they might as well have phoned in their six points every season. The odd Duncan Ferguson-inspired victory aside, United seemed to have the hex over Everton in the 90s and 2000s, and chalked up the victories with frequency. (Everton won just one league match against United between 1995 and 2010.)It wasn’t so long ago that Manchester United were so dominant against Everton that they might as well have phoned in their six points every season. But the Toffees seem to have ditched their inferiority complex, and their recent record has been much better: witness last season’s 3-0 stroll in the Goodison sunshine, when goals from McCarthy, Stones and Mirallas made it a sorry afternoon for Louis van Gaal. United need a victory after their 3-0 defeat by Arsenal, but they have a job on their hands here: Everton have looked decent so far, are hard to beat, and have Romelu Lukaku in sumptuous form.
