Premier League: Everton 0-3 Manchester United – as it happened
(35 minutes later) | |
4.53pm BST16:53 | |
An outstanding away performance from Manchester United, and a hopeless home one from Everton. United were top-notch in all areas of the pitch, and Everton, aside from a 15-minute spell after half-time, were outpassed, outplayed, and outclassed. Very disappointing for Roberto Martinez, but Louis van Gaal must be delighted: his team selection and tactics were spot-on. Smalling, Herrera, Schweinsteiger, Martial and Rooney were excellent, and their win was thoroughly deserved.
Thanks for reading. Bye.
4.51pm BST16:51 | |
Full-time: Everton 0-3 Manchester United
90 min + 3: Barkley has a go from 18 yards, but it’s over the bar. And that’s it!
4.50pm BST16:50 | |
90 min + 2: We spoke earlier about Rooney maybe not being the player he once was, but he’s played very well today, linking nicely with Martial and Herrera, and scoring that third goal. Martial, again, burns Coleman down the left, but he can’t quite find a teammate, and Everton hack clear.
4.48pm BST16:48 | |
90 min: Three minutes of stoppage time. Really, what’s the point?
4.46pm BST16:46 | |
89 min: Corner to United, but they’re not arsed about throwing too many players forward.
4.45pm BST16:45 | |
88 min: Davie Provan on commentary is praising Marcos Rojo, and well he might: Rojo has done very well at left-back, keeping Lennon and Coleman quiet and providing the cross for Herrera’s goal. Great job.
4.43pm BST16:43 | |
86 min: United happy to play keep-ball. Everton just want this to end.
4.41pm BST16:41 | |
84 min: United still look dangerous when they come forward: Lingard has been a willing outlet down the right. United’s fans are in good voice; Everton’s supporters are quiet.
4.39pm BST16:39 | |
82 min: Just over from Barkley. It looked like it was going high over the bar, but Barkley got some really good dip on it, and it just whistled over. De Gea had it covered, I think.
Change for United: Herrera, who has been excellent, and has a goal and an assist, is replaced by Fellaini.
Here’s Mark Payne: | |
@timmyhilleh Rooney hasn't scored away in the premier league with his left foot for more than a year now. He's past it.
Updated at 4.39pm BST | |
4.37pm BST16:37 | |
80 min: Barkley tripped by Schneiderlin on the edge of the box. Within shooting range.
4.36pm BST16:36 | |
79 min: Nearly a fourth for Martial, who did so well to wriggle past a clutch of Everton defenders on the touchline, but his shot was blocked. Martial has done really well today.
4.35pm BST16:35 | |
78 min: Ooh, good defending from Stones. Lingard streaked down the right, and his ball in was dangerous, but Stones recovered well to head behind for a corner.
4.35pm BST16:35 | |
77 min: Martial worries Coleman down the right, and feeds Rooney. Stones won it, but it fell nicely to Lingard on the edge of the box, but his shot is well wide. A pretty good chance, there, actually: he probably should have done better.
4.33pm BST16:33 | |
76 min: What a good performance this has been from Manchester United. I thought they might struggle in this game, but they’ve been hugely impressive. Everton look forlorn, and this game is petering out.
4.31pm BST16:31 | |
74 min: Poor corner from Barkley, whose performance today has been mixed. Change for United: Carrick on for the excellent Schweinsteiger. A like-for-like substitution.
4.30pm BST16:30 | |
73 min: Chris Smalling has been excellent today: he’s handled Lukaku really well. United are just sitting in here, and are happy to go forward on the counter-attack.
Change for Everton: Deulofeu on for Lennon.
4.28pm BST16:28 | |
71 min: Lingard and Herrera combine nicely down the right, but Jagielka does well to cut out the cross. Everton had a good 15 minutes or so after the break, but that third goal has really killed things off.
4.27pm BST16:27 | |
69 min: Well, Howard did much better there: Martial found Rooney clear down the left, who ran beyond Jagielka, and Rooney went into the box, but maybe his touch slightly let him down at the key moment, because he could only stab at it, allowing Howard to save with his midriff. Rooney probably should have scored, but the goalkeeper did well.
4.24pm BST16:24 | |
67 min: United could score four or five here: they’ve been so dominant. A really excellent team performance. The pass from Herrera for the goal was super, and good on Rooney: he needed that.
Updated at 4.25pm BST | |
4.23pm BST16:23 | |
65 min: Jeez, Everton. I mean, Jagielka made a bad mistake in giving it away so easily, but the goalkeeping, then… really, really poor. Howard could done his teammate a favour by at least standing up and making Rooney find the corner, but he just sort of fell to the ground, and Rooney passed it beyond him. Not good enough.
4.21pm BST16:21 | |
63 min: Terrible pass from Jagielka, and Herrera fed Rooney, who was all alone through the middle, racing clear, and had the easy chance of scoring, because Howard went down far too early and just allowed Rooney to sidefoot it into the centre of the net. Dreadful defending, and the contrast between the goalkeepers couldn’t be starker.

57 min: Coleman does well to dispossess Martial as he went into the box, but it was the Irishman’s earlier mistake that led to the United chance. Now Lukaku runs at Rojo, who has already been booked, but Rojo does well to keep his eye on the ball, and win it cleanly. | 57 min: Coleman does well to dispossess Martial as he went into the box, but it was the Irishman’s earlier mistake that led to the United chance. 55 min: Great save by De Gea! The first time in the match that Everton have got beyond United’s defence. It was a wonderful straight pass from Barkley, finding Lennon down the right, and Lennon’s cutback was met by Lukaku – but De Gea saved really well with his feet. So much better from Everton, but fine goalkeeping. He’s so good, De Gea, isn’t he? | 55 min: Great save by De Gea! The first time in the match that Everton have got beyond United’s defence. 51 min: Yellow card for Bastian Schweinsteiger, as much for persistent fouling as anything. Kone and Lukaku with a nice one-two, and it falls to Coleman in the box, whose hung-up cross looks sure to be finished by Barkley … but Barkley hesitated, fatally, and the chance was lost. Better from the hosts, though. | 51 min: Yellow card for Bastian Schweinsteiger, as much for persistent fouling as anything. Martin Crookall writes: “Tim, trust me, I am as disillusioned about Wayne Rooney’s performances as any United fan, and it’s astounding the number of passes to blue shirts that thew commentary I’m listening to is ignoring, but he has shown some neat touches in between the customary crap. If you could only fillet the uselessness out, he might look halfway decent today.” | Martin Crookall writes: “Tim, trust me, I am as disillusioned about Wayne Rooney’s performances as any United fan, and it’s astounding the number of passes to blue shirts that thew commentary I’m listening to is ignoring, but he has shown some neat touches in between the customary crap. “Agree re your player assessments. You could have added Rooney’s by now typical abysmal performance and Mata being taken to the cleaners every time Galloway attacks. Yeah, that Coleman tackle was late, and pretty ugly. I don’t think Coleman is 100%: he’s looked well off the pace, with none of his usual dash and vim. | Yeah, that Coleman tackle was late, and pretty ugly. 45 min: Everton really need half-time. They’ve been really poor this half – probably their worst 45 minutes of the season. Maybe Watford on the opening day. But they’ve forced a corner here. And a shot from Barkley! The angle was against him – he was almost at the touchline – but at least he worked De Gea. | 45 min: Everton really need half-time. 43 min: Everton were absolutely cut to ribbons then. Stones stepped up to play offside, and Rooney got clear down the right. His cutback for Martial was good, but it looked as though Martial didn’t quite get hold of his shot, and a combination of recovering Everton defenders just about managed to block. Nervy moments: that could easily have been three. | 43 min: Everton were absolutely cut to ribbons then. Stones stepped up to play offside, and Rooney got clear down the right. 2 min: I’m slightly disappointed Deulofeu hasn’t started here: I think he might have fancied getting at Rojo down that right side. Galloway and Naismith combine well, but Darmian, I think it was, does well to block. | 2 min: I’m slightly disappointed Deulofeu hasn’t started here: I think he might have fancied getting at Rojo down that right side. Wayne Rooney’s goal return this season has been, shall we say, modest. Rooney has only one goal in the Premier League, and has not registered away in the competition for 11 months. He’s still only 29, but is he cooked? That’s today’s hot topic. Email me! | Wayne Rooney’s goal return this season has been, shall we say, modest. So John Stones and Seamus Coleman return for Everton, and Aaron Lennon replaces Gerard Deulofeu in attack. Ander Herrera plays in midfield with Schweini and Schneidi, and Memphis Depay and Daley Blind drop to the bench. Maybe Louis van Gaal saw his former team Holland play in midweek, and benched them in disgust. Jeez, they were terrible, weren’t they? | So John Stones and Seamus Coleman return for Everton, and Aaron Lennon replaces Gerard Deulofeu in attack. Some sad news this morning: Howard Kendall has died aged 69. The grief will be keenly felt at Goodison: Kendall was probably their best ever manager, winning two titles in the 1980s, and appearing more than 200 times as a player, starring in that famous midfield with Colin Harvey and Alan Ball. The Holy Trinity, they called them. Maybe Everton’s best ever trio in the centre of the pitch. | Some sad news this morning: Howard Kendall has died aged 69. It wasn’t so long ago that Manchester United were so dominant against Everton that they might as well have phoned in their six points every season. The odd Duncan Ferguson-inspired victory aside, United seemed to have the hex over Everton in the 90s and 2000s, and chalked up the victories with frequency. (Everton won just one league match against United between 1995 and 2010.) | It wasn’t so long ago that Manchester United were so dominant against Everton that they might as well have phoned in their six points every season. But the Toffees seem to have ditched their inferiority complex, and their recent record has been much better: witness last season’s 3-0 stroll in the Goodison sunshine, when goals from McCarthy, Stones and Mirallas made it a sorry afternoon for Louis van Gaal. United need a victory after their 3-0 defeat by Arsenal, but they have a job on their hands here: Everton have looked decent so far, are hard to beat, and have Romelu Lukaku in sumptuous form. It’s a really exciting match-up between two famous old clubs, at the traditional 3pm kick off time, and I, for one, can’t wait. | But the Toffees seem to have ditched their inferiority complex, and their recent record has been much better: witness last season’s 3-0 stroll in the Goodison sunshine, when goals from McCarthy, Stones and Mirallas made it a sorry afternoon for Louis van Gaal.
