School officials said a shooting at Winston-Salem State University in the early hours of Sunday morning left one person dead and another injured. School officials said a shooting at Winston-Salem State University left one person dead and another injured.
The North Carolina university said in a release that the shooting was reported around 1.20am on Sunday in the area of Lot W near Wilson Hall and Gleason-Hairston Terrace. The university said a suspected gunman was on the loose and visitors to the campus on Sunday were urged to be cautious and stay away from restricted areas.
It said the campus was placed on lockdown at about 1.30am and that was lifted around 4.50am. The shooting was reported around 1.20am on Sunday near Wilson Hall and Gleason-Hairston Terrace. The campus was quickly placed on lockdown and movement restricted for about three hours until around 4.50am.
Campus police could not immediately be reached for comment. The university said both of the victims were believed to be students. The suspect was not believed to be a current student.
The historically black school in Winston-Salem was celebrating its homecoming weekend, when former students and staff return. Campus police could not be reached for comment.
