School officials said a shooting at Winston-Salem State University in the early hours of Sunday left one person dead and another injured. | |
The university said a suspected gunman was on the loose and visitors to the campus were urged to be cautious and stay away from restricted areas. | |
University spokesman Aaron Singleton said the dead man was 19-year-old Anthony White Jr, a second-year student from Charlotte. White’s mother said he was studying information technology. Xavier Martin of Charlotte said she did not know what led to the shooting. | |
Police said a second student received hospital treatment but was released early on Sunday. His name and condition were being withheld. | |
The shooting was reported around 1.20am, near some dormitories. The campus was locked down for about three hours. Singleton said police had a suspect, but would not provide other information. | |
