Dressed in a blue tracksuit, he spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth during the 10-minute hearing. In a packed court number one here, Mr Samuel stood with his arms folded flanked by two security officers.
During the hearing, which lasted 10 minutes, he spoke to confirm his name, age address and that he understood the charges.
Magistrates heard details of what is alleged to have happened which cannot be reported for legal reasons.
But it emerged Mr Samuel had a history of mental health problems. He suffered from bipolar disporder, a form of manic depression.
