Three officers shot, wounded in Prince William County Three officers shot, wounded in Prince William County
(about 1 hour later)
Three Prince William County police officers were shot and wounded Saturday evening as they answered a call about a domestic incident, authorities said. The officers’ conditions were not immediately known. Three Prince William County police officers were shot and wounded Saturday evening when they responded to a call about a possible domestic matter, authorities said.
One person was taken into custody in connection with the matter, according to Sgt. Jonathan Perok, a county police spokesman. The officers were flown by helicopter to Inova Fairfax Hospital, but their conditions could not be learned immediately.
The shooting broke out after officers went to the 13000 block of Lashmere Court, in the Lake Ridge area. One person was taken into custody in connection with the shooting, but no information about the individual had been released as of late Saturday.
It was not immediately clear what prompted the gunfire, or whether any of the officers fired their weapons. The shooting broke out at about 5:30 p.m. in the 13000 block of Lashmere Court, a relatively short residential street in the Lake Ridge area that is near the county government center.
At least one official account said the three officers were in surgery. It was not clear where they were hit or how many times.
The nature of the domestic disagreement that brought the officers to the site also was not made clear.
However, Corey Stewart, who is chairman of the Board of County Supervisors, said a woman apparently was killed in connection with the incident.
Sgt. Jonathan Perok, a police spokesman who answered questions from the media, said he could not confirm that account.
A woman who lives on Lashmere Court said she was visiting a neighbor on the same street at the time of the incident.
The woman said she heard sounds but doubted that they might have resulted from gunfire, particularly on a street that she described as part of a quiet and close-knit neighborhood.
“We never thought it could be shots,” said Maritza Gutierrez.
Asked to recount what she had heard, she said, “Boom, boom, boom. Something like that.” The sounds occurred close together, she said. “Very quick.”
Rather than gunfire, it seemed more likely to her that it could have been a sound related to daily life, such as the opening of a garage door.
However, as police and emergency personnel flooded into the area, she began to realize that something out of the ordinary had occurred.
It was a while, she said, before she decided to look outside to determine what had happened.
She said she saw someone, apparently one of the three wounded officers, lying on a lawn.
Emergency personnel were giving treatment, and it appeared that the officer’s uniform had been removed to facilitate the treatment.
Finally, Gutierrez said, the patient was taken from the lawn to an ambulance.
