A number of cows escaped from the truck and were seen roaming along the carriageway in both directions. A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire & Rescue said crews were met with a scene of "devastation".
The northbound carriageway was closed and traffic southbound was also affected. He said vehicles had to swerve to avoid further collisions as cattle were wandering across both carriageways.
Police could not say when the animals would be cleared and the road reopened. A further 30 cattle remained trapped within the vehicle, the spokesman said.
The cattle truck completely blocked the northbound carriageway.
The motorway was expected to be closed for some considerable time.
