Cattle roam motorway after crash | Cattle roam motorway after crash |
(about 12 hours later) | |
Disruption is continuing as police try to catch cows which broke loose on a motorway after a cattle truck hit the central reservation and overturned.
The accident happened on the M73, near Baillieston on the outskirts of Glasgow, at about 1800 BST on Tuesday.
Sections of the M74 and M73 have been closed as police try to round up the last few stray animals.
A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said crews attending the crash were met with a scene of "devastation".
He said vehicles had to swerve to avoid further collisions on Tuesday as cattle were wandering across both carriageways.
An emergency vet worked with police and fire crews overnight to try to release a further 30 cattle from the vehicle.
The cattle truck had been completely blocking the northbound carriageway. The driver was uninjured.
The M73 was completely closed for several hours on Tuesday and it was originally thought the cows had all been rounded up, but a small group strayed onto the road again at about 0420 BST on Wednesday, again closing the motorway.
Rail services were also affected after one of the cows wandered onto the track and was struck by a train engine at Baillieston, Glasgow. There were no passengers on board. |
