(35 minutes later)
Warning shots have been fired during a police operation near Amsterdam's central train station. A warning shot has been fired during a police operation near Amsterdam's central station.
The gunfire came before a short chase involving a black Volkswagen Golf, which ended with three people being arrested in the street a few hundred metres away from the station. Amsterdam police said three people were arrested after being involved in a short car chase shortly after 6:30PM on Thursday.
Dutch police said no-one was injured. One suspect was arrested after the car was forced to a stop near the station, and the other two were apprehended nearby after trying to flee on foot.
The area around the station has now reportedly been cordoned off, and there is a heavy police presence. The incident occurred on the same day at least 30 people were killed in Brussels, but the Amsterdam case is not believed to be linked to terrorism. Police noted that one suspect was seen throwing away a package thought to contain drugs as they ran away.
It happened on the same day at least 30 people were killed in explosions in Brussels. No-one was injured in the incident, although panic was sparked in the Dutch capital after the events in Brussels.
There is currently no indication the two events are linked, and the reasons for the arrests and gunfire are not yet known. The suspects are now being investigated by police, and traffic in the centre of Amsterdam is beginning to return to normal.
