Work was being carried out on the ground floor, a former bank, but stopped two weeks ago, apparently after serious cracks were discovered in the building. One witness reported hearing a loud bang before the building collapsed. Others believe it may have been caused by an explosion as there was a strong smell of gas.
Óscar Núñez, who works in a lawyer’s office nearby, told a radio station that “there was a loud explosion and then the street was covered in dust”.
a neighbour said: “You could hear people inside screaming.” At least two people have been taken out of the building but there are confused reports as to how many remain inside. |
