Emergency services say at least eight people are trapped inside the remains of the four-storey building in the village of Los Cristianos. The incident occurred at 9.30am in the calle Valle Menèndez. Work was being carried out on the ground floor, a former bank, but stopped two weeks ago, apparently after serious cracks were discovered in the building. One eyewitness reported hearing a loud bang before the building collapsed. Others believe it may have been caused by an explosion as there was a strong smell of gas.
