One dead and nine missing after Tenerife building collapse
(about 7 hours later) | |
At least one person has died and nine are missing after an apartment building partially collapsed in southern Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, on Thursday.
The five-storey building in the village of Los Cristianos collapsed at 9.30am in the Calle del Valle Menèndez. Adjacent buildings were evacuated as a precaution.
Arona city council confirmed a woman had been found dead, while searches continued for nine of the 28 people who lived in the building.
Local media reported that the body of a woman aged about 70 had been pulled from the rubble by emergency services.
Of the people injured, a 57-year-old woman was said to be in a serious condition, a man sustained minor injuries and a second woman was being treated after suffering a panic attack.
It is not clear if the nine missing people were in the building. Several of the flats were used as holiday apartments and may not have been in use.

Work was being carried out on the ground floor, a former bank, but stopped two weeks ago, apparently after serious cracks were discovered in the building. One witness reported hearing a loud bang before the building collapsed. Óscar Núñez, who works in a lawyer’s office nearby, told local radio: “There was a loud explosion and then the street was covered in dust.” A neighbour said: “You could hear people inside screaming.” |
