Possible debris from EgyptAir Flight 804 found southeast of Crete Wreckage from missing Flight MS804 found in southern Mediterranean, EgyptAir confirms
(about 3 hours later)
A Greek military ship searching for the debris from the EgyptAir flight, which went missing over the southern Mediterranean, has found two floating objects close to where the plane disappeared. EgyptAir has said that debris from missing Flight 804 has been found in the search area south of the island of Crete. Discovery of the wreckage, which is likely to belong to the plane, has also been confirmed by the Greek and Egyptian authorities.

"There have been finds south-east of Crete, inside the Cairo flight information region," Greek army general staff spokesman Vassilis Beletsiotis told AFP. Ahmed Adel, the vice president of EgyptAir, said that the company’s search teams have found debris from Flight 804 as he gave an interview to CNN. "We have found the wreckage," he said.
The objects were plastic and colored red and white, Reuters reported earlier, citing defense sources. They were spotted some 370 km south of the Greek island of Crete, close to the spot where a transponder signal was emitted earlier. The company also tweeted that the Egyptian Ministry of Civil Aviation had received an official letter from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry informing them about the discovery of debris from the plane.
Another Greek military official told AP that an Egyptian search plane also spotted two orange items in the same area. One of the items was oblong, the official said. At the same time, Egypt’s Civil Aviation Ministry confirmed that Greek authorities had found “floating materials” that allegedly are wreckage and life vests from the missing flight, as reported by Reuters.
Greek state TV ERT also reported that two "orange-colored" objects were located in the same area and said they were lifejackets from the missing aircraft. Egyptian Envoy to France Ehab Badawy also confirmed that Greece has informed Egypt about the discovery in the search area of white and blue wreckage likely belonging to Flight 804.
EgyptAir Flight 804 went missing early Thursday morning as it was en route from Paris to Cairo with 56 passengers and 10 crewmembers on board. The Airbus A320 disappeared just as it was flying from an area under Greek air traffic control to the Egyptian Flight Information Region. "All I will say is that our embassy in Athens told us that it was contacted by Greek authorities who signalled that they found white and blue debris corresponding to EgyptAir's colours," Badawy told BFM television.
Egypt, France and Greece deployed military aircraft and ships for a search operation in the area. "I can't confirm it is the debris, but it would be reasonable to think it is the debris of this plane," he added, as cited by Reuters.
Investigators say no possible cause of the disaster can be ruled out yet, but the lack of a distress call from the plane indicates a possible bombing attack or a major technological failure that destroyed the aircraft in a matter of seconds. Later, however, Greek defence sources denied to Reuters having discovered blue and white debris from the EgyptAir plane.
