Malaysian officials have deployed 1,000 police officers to protect the Olympic torch as it passes through the streets of the capital Kuala Lumpur on Monday. The Malaysian leg of the Olympic torch relay has begun, amid tight security over fears of pro-Tibet protests.
The torch drew demonstrations from pro-Tibet activists as it passed through cities such as London and Paris on its worldwide relay. About 1,000 police officers have been deployed to protect the torch as it makes its way through Kuala Lumpur.
However, it also made peaceful progress through cities including Bangkok in Thailand and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Police have already detained a Japanese family of three who unfurled a pro-Tibet banner at the starting point.
Despite the tight security, Malaysian officials do not expect protests. The torch relay has prompted demonstrations from activists in other cities, such as London, San Francisco
