Torch relay begins in Malaysia Torch relay peaceful in Malaysia
(about 3 hours later)
The Malaysian leg of the Olympic torch relay has begun, amid tight security over fears of pro-Tibet protests. The Olympic torch has been paraded through the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur under heavy security.
About 1,000 police officers have been deployed to protect the torch as it makes its way through Kuala Lumpur. The 16 km (9.9 mile) relay was largely peaceful - the only notable disruption happening when a Japanese family unfurled a Tibetan flag.
Police have already detained a Japanese family of three who unfurled a pro-Tibet banner at the starting point. About 1,000 police officers were deployed to guard the torch as it made its way through the rain-soaked city.
The torch relay has prompted demonstrations from activists in other cities, such as London, San Francisco and Paris. When the torch relay went through Europe and the United States, it was met by angry demonstrations.
However it also made relatively peaceful progress through other cities, including Bangkok in Thailand and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. However it made relatively peaceful progress through other cities, including Bangkok in Thailand and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Protests in London and Paris - where demonstrators angry at Chinese occupation of Tibet tried to disrupt the relay - have created headlines across the world. Police intervened to stop the ensuing scuffle and took the three Japanese away.
