A French police officer has been killed in a knife attack and members of his family taken hostage in a suburb outside Paris. He has been named in local media as Jean-Baptiste Salvaing, deputy chief of judicial police at Les Mureaux police station. 
It is not yet known how many people are being taken hostage or exactly who they are, though there is speculation the victim's wife and child may be being held.
Shots and an explosion have been heard, according to reports but no action has yet been confirmed. 
Elite police commandos from the RAID unit are on the scene and are in negotiations with the attacker. The authorities have also sealed off the street and reportedly cut off power and gas to the neighbourhood.
"This is a crisis and we can expect it will last," a spokesman of Interior Minister said at around 11pm, Le Parisien reported.
He added: "We know neither the identity nor the real motives of this individual."
He did not confirm reports of a hostage situation but the behaviour of the authorities suggests it is a possibility.
Paris has been a city on edge since an Islamist attack in November killed more than 100 people, but there is nothing yet to suggest this incident is terror related.
