A French police officer has been killed in a knife attack and members of his family possibly taken hostage in the suburb of Magnanville, Yvelines department, just outside Paris. A French police officer and his wife have been killed in knife attacks by an unknown assailant, who has now been shot dead by police after a tense stand off. 
A small boy, 3, was caught up in the hostage situation which followed but was later rescued by police. 
The man, named in in local media as Jean-Baptiste Salvaing, deputy chief of judicial police at Les Mureaux police station, was killed first at around 8pm.

He has been named in local media as Jean-Baptiste Salvaing, deputy chief of judicial police at Les Mureaux police station.  His attacker then entered his home and held the man's wife hostage, along with the couple's three year old son. 
It is not yet known how many people are being taken hostage or exactly who they are, though there is speculation the victim's wife and child may be being held. Elite police commandos from the RAID unit attended the the scene and authorities entered negotiations with the attacker. The street was also sealed off.

"This is a crisis and we can expect it will last," a spokesman of Interior Minister said at around 11pm, Le Parisien reported. The child has been resuced unhurt, but is in a state of shock, according to French radio reports. 
He added: "We know neither the identity nor the real motives of this individual."
He did not confirm reports of a hostage situation but the behaviour of the authorities suggests it is a possibility.
