In a surprise twist to Britain’s ongoing political crisis, pro-Brexit leader Boris Johnson announced he would not be seeking the Conservative party leadership and was therefore ruling himself out of succeeding David Cameron as prime minister. Johnson, one of the leaders of the Leave campaign, was one of the frontrunners to win the contest, along with home secretary Theresa May, who announced her candidacy earlier today. But the decision by his pro-Brexit colleague Michael Gove to stand himself and attack Johnson may have damaged the former mayor of London’s chances. In the speech in London, Johnson said the next Conservative leader would have to unify his party and ensure that Britain stood tall in the world. “Having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances in parliament, I have concluded that person cannot be me.” Steven Crabb, Liam Fox and Andrew Leadsom are also running. The result will be announced on 9 September. | In a surprise twist to Britain’s ongoing political crisis, pro-Brexit leader Boris Johnson announced he would not be seeking the Conservative party leadership and was therefore ruling himself out of succeeding David Cameron as prime minister. In his first data model looking at the US election, pollster Nate Silver has calculated that Hillary Clinton has an 81% chance of winning the election, to Donald Trump’s 19%. Meanwhile, a 20-year-old British man faces charges of disrupting an official function and two firearms counts after grabbing a police officer’s gun at a Trump rally. He later told police he wanted to kill the presumptive Republican nominee, according to the US Secret Service. There are also new claims that Trump sought foreign donations. He will be speaking about trade in Manchester, New Hampshire, today. | In his first data model looking at the US election, pollster Nate Silver has calculated that Hillary Clinton has an 81% chance of winning the election, to Donald Trump’s 19%. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said Tuesday’s attack in which 42 people died should be a turning point in the global fight against terrorism. Erdoğan blamed Islamic State for the bombing as police detained 13 in raids. Turkish authorities believe at least three attackers sprayed travellers with bullets and then detonated suicide vests in a rampage that lasted just a few minutes. Violence over the past year has crippled Turkey’s tourism industry and threatens its ambitions as a global hub. One of the victims was a Tunisian doctor hoping to reclaim his son from Isis. | Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said Tuesday’s attack in which 42 people died should be a turning point in the global fight against terrorism. Speaking in Ottawa at a meeting with Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico, Barack Obama fought back against isolationism, arguing that “pulling up the drawbridge” could only be a bad thing. But he noted “legitimate” concerns about globalization and urged countries to shape an international order that prioritizes workers. | Speaking in Ottawa at a meeting with Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico, Barack Obama fought back against isolationism, arguing that “pulling up the drawbridge” could only be a bad thing. A Harvard study has identified just four men and a woman who are behind as many as 440, or one in seven, death sentences in the US. One had a poster from the movie Tombstone on his office wall with the words “Justice is coming” emblazoned on it; another used a miniature model of an electric chair as a paperweight. Lynne Abraham, aka the Queen of Death, who has more than 100 death sentences to her name, described the emotion of watching an execution as a “non-event”. | A Harvard study has identified just four men and a woman who are behind as many as 440, or one in seven, death sentences in the US. Earlier this month, the equipment company Riddell announced its Smarter Football campaign – but the only way to avoid debilitating head injuries may be to not play football at all, writes Jack Moore. `Yet no matter how smart we have made football – tinkering with the rules, improving the equipment, fixing leadership problems, or encouraging better conditioning – the damage caused by the game has proven inescapable.” | Earlier this month, the equipment company Riddell announced its Smarter Football campaign – but the only way to avoid debilitating head injuries may be to not play football at all, writes Jack Moore. `Yet no matter how smart we have made football – tinkering with the rules, improving the equipment, fixing leadership problems, or encouraging better conditioning – the damage caused by the game has proven inescapable.” |

Peter Bradshaw is relieved that the movie version of the British fashionista satire is as ludicrous as it should be. “Sixty is the new 40, 90 is the new 70 and Jennifer Saunders’s Edina and Joanna Lumley’s Patsy are back,” he writes. “The less-than-dynamic duo make a characteristically wobbly and hungover reappearance in heels, champagne flutes in one hand and cigarettes in the other. No nonsense about vaping.” In other movie news, we look at how Scarlett Johansson became box office queen and the diversity-boosting efforts of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences following the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. A new patent recently granted to Apple may be an indication of technology restrictions to come. The patent shows that Apple may allow iPhone cameras to be disabled through special infrared sensors, giving the example of a concert venue using the technology to make sure no one makes bootleg videos of a touring band. But as Danny Yadron reports, it’s not hard to imagine a government such as Turkey or Russia using it to blackout social media coverage of a protest. | A new patent recently granted to Apple may be an indication of technology restrictions to come.
