In a joint statement, the emergency services said the gas leak was confined to the Bridge Street site and staff from within the building were evacuated. Carlsberg confirmed the fatality shortly after 20:00, adding that one person was also in a serious but stable condition.
Of those taken to hospital, 11 were Carlsberg staff and 11 emergency crew members.
Julian Momen, chief executive officer of Carlsberg UK, said: "We are deeply, deeply saddened by today's tragic incident and subsequent fatality.
"Our immediate thoughts are with the individual's family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time and we will support them in every way we can."

Carlsberg said in a statement: "Earlier today there was a safety incident within the Carlsberg UK brewery on Bridge Street, Northampton.

"We will provide further updates as soon as we are in position to do so."
A spokesman for the firm added: "Brewery employees have been taken to a safe space on the site and office employees are free to leave as they wish".
Northamptonshire Police said six fire engines were called to the scene to "secure" the site, but that no cordons or road closures had been set up.
However, they have warned motorists to avoid the area to "reduce congestion".
