One crew member was rescued from the upturned hull. The search is continuing for the other crew members. One person - spotted clinging to the upturned hull of the "Belgium-flagged" boat - was rescued and flown to hospital by helicopter.
A coastguard search and rescue helicopter based at Lydd, two lifeboats from Ramsgate and the coastguard rescue team from Margate are involved. The Coastguard helicopter plus two lifeboats from Ramsgate and Harwich are continuing the search.
The BBC understands the fishing boat is from Belgium. A spokeswoman for the MCA said the search was covering an area from Ramsgate to the mid-channel.
A spokeswoman for the MCA said she could not confirm the nationality of the vessel or how many people were missing. Kaimes Beasley, from the Dover Coastguard, said at this time of year it was possible to survive in the water for up to 15 hours.
She said: "The search is concentrating on an area around where the boat was found - north-east of Ramsgate through to the mid-channel." "We're still not at that point yet, so we will still continue to search," he said.
