London attack: Armed police respond to second incident at Borough Market London attack: Footage emerges of armed police rushing into bars and down streets in response to attacks
(about 1 hour later)
Armed police have responded to an incident at Borough Market following an attack in London bridge that saw a van drive into a number of pedestrians. Dramatic video footage has shown police sweeping bars in London Bridge following a terrorist attack in the area that killed at least one person and injured dozens on Saturday night.
The Met Police confirmed on Twitter that officers were responding to reports of stabbings in Borough Market, where it said “shots have been fired”. Screams can be heard in one clip showing frightened revellers in the busy Katzenjammers German beer bar close to Borough Market rush to tables and crouch low as officers ordered them to hide under tables and behind chairs.
Video footage appears to show people in a bar shouting and ducking under tables, as police urge them to “stay down”. The Metropolitan Police confirmed at 11:43pm that they were responding to reports of stabbings in Borough Market, less than two hours after emergency services were called to London Bridge after a van plowed into a number of pedestrians just yards away.
An image has since emerged of two men believed to be the attackers lying on the ground at Borough Market after reportedly having been shot by police. It has since emerged the two incidents are believed to be linked, with the Met Police reporting that the attackers mowed into people before getting out in Borough Market and attacking passers-by, including a British Transport Police officer, with knives.
Gabriele Sciotto, who took the photograph, told The Independent he witnessed three men trying to attack people in the crowds, before officers shot them and they fell to the ground. Police officers responded quickly to the incident and the three men were shot dead shortly after they began their rampage, the Met Police said, leaving six dead and 30 requiring hospital treatment.
The Met have advised people in a Twitter post to either run or hide in a place of safety, urging people to “remain calm, but be alert and vigilant”. Other footage shows high number of security and emergency services sweeping the streets and people can be seen running as officers shout “Get back” and “Keep moving” in the London Bridge area, where the van was seen plowing into pedestrians just after 10pm.
One witness tweeted: “Just come out of Borough Bistro where attack happen - saw man wielding knife and people on the floor in blood. In total shock.” One clip appears to show armed police in the underground ordering people to get on the train.
Armed police officers earlier responded to reports of a vehicle in collision with pedestrians on London Bridge, during which at least one person is said to have died. People could later be seen being escorted away from the scene of the ongoing police incidents around London Bridge and Borough Market with their hands above their heads.
Officers also responded to an incident in the Vauxhall area, which was later confirmed to be unrelated to the terror incident in London Bridge and borough Market. Officers also responded to an incident in the Vauxhall area, which was later confirmed to be unrelated to the terror incident in London Bridge and borough Market.
Transport for London (TfL) confirmed that London Bridge, Borough and Bank stations were closed, urging: "Please avoid the London Bridge area tonight." Met Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said in a statement: “The suspects had been confronted and shot by the police within eight minutes of the first call.
More follows... "The suspects were wearing what looked like explosive vests but these were later established to be hoaxes."
