Matthew Hannaberry, senior ambulance supervisor, described the scene of the crash as “chaotic” owing to the number of people involved. But he said paramedics had been able to take the critically injured woman to hospital within minutes. A 54-year-old woman’s injuries were initially thought to be life-threatening, but her condition was later said to have improved.
“It was quite a chaotic scene because not only were the cyclists that had been involved in the incident there, there were another dozen cyclists who had been travelling in that peloton,” he said. Queensland Ambulance senior operations supervisor Matthew Hannaberry described the scene of the crash on Dornoch Terrace in Highgate Hill as “chaotic” due to the number of people involved.
But he said paramedics were able to take the critically injured woman to hospital within minutes.
“Upon our arrival, it was quite a chaotic scene because not only were the cyclists that had been involved in the incident there, there were another dozen cyclists who had been travelling in that peloton,” he said.
The 54-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man were taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital. The man, 51, sustained broken bones and was due to undergo surgery.
The other three cyclists – a 45-year-old man, a 54-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man – were taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospital.
The 22-year-old driver of the car was not physically injured but was treated for shock on the scene.

The woman and a man were treated for possible head injuries and were taken to Princess Alexandra hospital. Reports from the scene indicated the driver might have been blinded by the sun as he performed a U-turn.
The other three cyclists – two men and a woman – had injuries ranging from fractures to cuts and bruises and were taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospital.
