(10 minutes later)
England began the second Ashes Test well but were under pressure by the afternoon after losing both openers. Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood shared a gritty unbroken half-century stand to put England back on course on day one of the second Ashes Test.
After a watchful first hour, Andrew Strauss (14) and Alastair Cook (27) both fell to Stuart Clark. After a watchful first hour, openers Andrew Strauss (14) and Alastair Cook (27) both fell to Stuart Clark.
The tourists resumed after lunch on 58-2, with Ian Bell unbeaten on nine and Paul Collingwood eight not out. There was a difficult period around lunch, before Bell and Collingwood took on Brett Lee in mid-afternoon.
Both teams went unchanged, England again ignoring Monty Panesar while Glenn McGrath overcame a a heel problem to play for Australia. Both teams went unchanged. England again ignored Monty Panesar while Glenn McGrath overcame a heel problem.

1433: Lee bounces Collingwood, but even at over 90mph, the batsman avoids it easily. Colly tucks Lee away for one to move to 31. Bell is 23. It's like Tavare and Boycott in the middle out there. Actually, my editor has just informed me they're scoring at 3.7 per over from the last 10 - weird, seems like they're crawling along. A couple of no-balls from Lee, who's struggling for rhythm. 98-2
1428: Bell almost caught at first slip, edging a fizzer from Warne, but it falls just short. Bell dances down the pitch and drives straight to the bowler before Warne almost does him in the flight again. 95-2

1426: Crackerjack shot from Collingwood, bringing up the 50 partnership with a cut for four off Lee. That fairly raced to the fence. 1421: Colly nibbles at a sharp-turning delivery from Warney. Warne then plonks one down that sits up and Colly cuts him away for four before Collingwood almost nibbles again. Warne, as always when he nearly cleans someone up, looks like a man who's just stod in some dog business on his way to his daughter's wedding. 91-21421: Colly nibbles at a sharp-turning delivery from Warney. 1417: Two slips and a gully for Lee to Collingwood. The Durham man really is the honest yeoman in the England team, always grafting. 1410: Warne out of the attack, Lee on. The Barmy Army warming up again which reminds me of a great quote by legendary England quick Harold Larwood: "A cricket tour to Australia would be delightful - if you were deaf." Lee's first ball is a rank half-bunger which Bell dispatches to the fine-leg boundary. Belly tucks Lee away for another couple and England are inching towards the gallon mark. Bell shoulders arms to Lee, and the ball isn't far away from his off-stick. Bit of rib-music from Lee, but Bell gets up on tip-toes and plays it into the ground. Lee slices Bell in two with the final ball and the ball races off the inside edge for four. Ten from the over. 83-21410: Warne out of the attack, Lee on. 1300: Colly rocks back and cuts Warne away for one, Bell just making his ground, and England safely negotiate Warne's last over before lunch. 1245: Bell leaves another straightish one from Warne and the ball just misses off. Warne then fizzes one past the face of Bell's bat - he's having the Warwickshire man on toast at the moment. Bell uses his feet but Martyn saves the run at mid-wicket. Short leg in now and the pressure is mounting. 1241: Bell paddles Clark to backward point for one. Belly may have come of age as a Test cricketer this year but he still looks like a precocious 14-year-old promoted to play in his school's first Xl. Which begs the question: when he was a precocious 14-year-old promoted to play in his school's first Xl, did he look about seven? He attempts to pull his bat out of the way and almost glances the ball behind, but it bounces just in front of wicket-keeper Gilchrist. One from it and Strauss follows up with a tuck round the corner for a single. 3-0
1109: What England need this morning is a Douglas Jardine. Pelham Warner, England's manager on the Bodyline tour, once said of Jardine: "When he sees a cricket ground with an Australian on it, he goes mad". McGrath shares the new ball with Lee Boy, and he's going round the wicket from the off. They reckon Cooky's susceptible to the ball angled in. He gets England off the mark with a single into the covers. 1-01109: What England need this morning is a Douglas Jardine. 1105: Lee bounces in...and his first ball is Harmisonesque, wide outside Strauss' off-stump. The second is also wide, and Strauss wisely lets it go. A maiden to start with, but no scares for Strauss. 0-01105: Lee bounces in...and his first ball is Harmisonesque, wide outside Strauss' off-stump. "Guy Sebastian, the bloke who sang the Aussie anthem, is from Australian Idol fame. He's one of those get-famous-quick TV products. I'd rather not comment on his talent, but in his latest video clip he bags former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins. Even in fantasy, not many of us can lay claim to that..." 1059: Players are out, to strains of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. That's nice of the hosts. Big knock this for Strauss - has he left his pull in his coffin? News reaches me that the Barmy Army's trumpeter has been banned. The fun fascists out in force in Adelaide.1059: Players are out, to strains of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. That's nice of the hosts. "The decision not to play Monty Panesar is either the gutsiest of all time or the stupidest. Events over the next five days, at this most beautiful ground, will tell all." 1046: Players are out for the anthems. Not quite sure about all this, all seems a bit overblown for cricket. Warney and Pietersen side by side as they walk out - not much chat, that little tiff clearly hasn't blown over. A very presentable lady sings God Save the Queen - I'd like to kiss her. A chap called Guy Sebastien sings Advance Australian Fair, bit of reverb, Simon Cowell would have him on toast.1046: Players are out for the anthems. "Has Fletcher been drinking from the fountain of false hope? The same team that got stuffed out of sight in the first Test will not win the second one. What is this obsession with Giles?" "I hope McGrath breaks down. As for England, it's about how well you play. I think Monty's a better player than Giles, but spinners won't be a decisive factor on this pitch, it will be about the pace bowlers." Geoffrey Boycott on TMS"I hope McGrath breaks down. 1038: McGrath is fit for Australia so it's the same 22 players going head to head in the second Test. England will want to keep him out there for a couple of days to see if that heel flares up again.1038: McGrath is fit for Australia so it's the same 22 players going head to head in the second Test. "We've got to post a total and we're keen to rectify what happened last week. The morale is good and there's a calmness about the team. It's tempting to change the side but we thought the balance was right and it's just a case of performing..." 1030: The skippers are out in the middle awaiting the toss. This could decide the rest of the series. Come on Freddie, choose correctly...and he has done! 1021: Morning ladies and gents and here's to a slightly less spirit-sapping second Test. However, the portents aren't good - I am still reeling from the news that England are unchanged. Yes, the XI that represented us so magnificently in Brisbane have been retained, meaning no room for Monty. I haven't seen the England dressing room yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if there was a white flag fluttering from the window...1021: Morning ladies and gents and here's to a slightly less spirit-sapping second Test.
