Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood shared a stand of 113 as England made a cautious start to the second Ashes Test. Paul Collingwood played another gritty innings as England made a subdued start to the second Ashes Test in Adelaide.
Bell was caught and bowled by Brett Lee for 60 just after tea, bringing Kevin Pietersen in to join Collingwood, who was on 54 at the time. Collingwood came in with the tourists 45-2 after winning the toss, Andrew Strauss (14) and Alastair Cook (27) both having fallen to Stuart Clark.
After a watchful first hour, openers Andrew Strauss (14) and Alastair Cook (27) both fell to Stuart Clark. He and Ian Bell (60) put on 113 for the fourth wicket in a 40-over stand before Bell fell hooking Brett Lee.
England, who won the toss, again ignored Monty Panesar while Glenn McGrath overcame a heel problem. Kevin Pietersen showed his intent as he pulled Lee for four second ball and the England 200 came up in mid-evening.

1709: Extravagant spin from Warne, but KP's leaves well alone. Maiden over. 205-3
1703: Colly brings up the 200 with a drive into the covers. Clark just takes the heat off it and the batsmen run three. Another minimalist stab into the off-side for one. KP slams a foot down the pitch, straight drives and gets three for it. Pietersen looks like he's sporting a rakish, Errol Flynn moustache under that lid, though it could be heavy stubble. I hope for his sake it is. McGrath tries a bouncer and Collingwood moves out of line with the minumum of fuss, like a palm tree swaying gently in the breeze. Players take drinks. 205-3
1659: Pietersen staggers down the track to Warne and the ball loops up off his pads. KP sweeps and top-edges down to backward square-leg. Colly forces to leg and gets a couple for it. He's still grinding, and moves to 70 with a cut for one. 199-3
1654: That Boon-alike hasn't reappeared yet, not sure what the Barmy Army have done with him, eaten him perhaps. He'd make a pretty hearty meal, especially the thighs. KP misses out on a full-bunger, crashing it straight to Langer at mid-wicket. Pietersen then eschews the hook shot two balls on the trot and McGrath has a little chunter. KP clips the final ball of the over to wide long-on for three. 195-31654: That Boon-alike hasn't reappeared yet, not sure what the Barmy Army have done with him, eaten him perhaps. 1650: Bit of banter in the crowd between a David Boon lookalike and the Barmy Army, the wee, squat man disappearing into a huddle of English fans. Colly rocks back and cuts for one. KP charges Warne and prods him to mid-on for a single. KP then slaps Warne over long-off for the first maximum of the match - 10 from the over. Pietersen 19 already. 192-31650: Bit of banter in the crowd between a David Boon lookalike and the Barmy Army, the wee, squat man disappearing into a huddle of English fans. 1645: McGrath back on for Lee and Collingwod dabs it to square-leg for one. KP might fancy giving Pigeon some tap here, he looks a little ginger and is rarely topping 80mph. Just one from the over. The attendance is 31,000, the biggest since the 1950s we think. 182-31645: McGrath back on for Lee and Collingwod dabs it to square-leg for one. 1642: Warney on for McGrath and it's him against KP again. Could be some pyrotechnics and I'm looking forward to this. Long chat between Punter and Warne before the over commences and KP straight drives him for one first up. Colly stabs at one and Warne finds the edge - but the ball runs dribbles away to point. Colly uses his feet and flicks Warne away for one. KP plays a forward defensive before practising a flamboyant sweep, just to show Warne he could have done that if he'd felt like it. 181-31642: Warney on for McGrath and it's him against KP again. 1637: Lee struggling a bit with no-balls, that's his fifth now. Lee bumps KP again and Pietersen, totally in control, drags him away for one. Lee getting that yorker working now but Colly weeds it out. Colly forces into the off-side and scampers two. 179-31637: Lee struggling a bit with no-balls, that's his fifth now. 1630: Sketchy little period this for Colly and he nearly nudges a McGrath full-toss to the mid-wicket fielder. KP then sticks a big hoary foot down the pitch and slaps McGrath through extra-cover for four. Two short mid-wickets for KP - he got out there in the second innings in Brisbane. KP gets another full-toss but only gets one for it to mid-wicket. 175-31630: Sketchy little period this for Colly and he nearly nudges a McGrath full-toss to the mid-wicket fielder. 1627: Lee puts Colly on his jacksie with a heat-seeking bumper. Malicious. Lee walks straight down the pitch and smiles at Colly through his helmet grill. Tasty, very tasty. Short and wide from Lee but Colly can only get one for it. Missed out there. KP gets a bouncer and sways out of the line. Two from the over and Lee is getting a hint of reverse swing. 169-31627: Lee puts Colly on his jacksie with a heat-seeking bumper. Malicious. 1620: Never have I seen a batsman so aware of his limitations as Collingwood. McGrath almost cleans him up, the Durham man almost getting an inside edge onto his stumps. Two for it though. Nice shot from Collingwood next up and he gets three for a prod straight down the pitch. 167-31620: Never have I seen a batsman so aware of his limitations as Collingwood. 1613: WICKET England 158-3 (Bell 60)Bell becomes the latest English batsman to give his wicket away, top-edging a hook and Lee taking the catch. How deflating after all that graft, a bit like getting to within 50 yards of the peak of Mount Everest and saying, "you know what lads, I can't be bothered with this, I'm turning back".1613: WICKET England 158-3 (Bell 60)Bell becomes the latest English batsman to give his wicket away, top-edging a hook and Lee taking the catch. 1610: McGrath is back on - let's see how this blister of his is bearing up. He's going round the wicket to Collingwood, always trying something new. Collingwood turns him away to long-leg and runs two. England's 150 up. Colly is nearly cleaned up by a leg-stump yorker, he didn't know much about that. 150-21610: McGrath is back on - let's see how this blister of his is bearing up. 1541: Warney, bowling the last over before lunch, drops short and Collingwood whips it away for two and repeats the shot for a single to bring up his 50. Nuggety from Collingwood, very much the Steve Davis of this England outfit. Bell goes to 50 from the very next ball, flicking Warne to mid-off. And it's tea. Bell's fifty came off 140 balls and Collingwood's from 114. Attritional, but they're doing a valuable job. 144-21541: Warney, bowling the last over before lunch, drops short and Collingwood whips it away for two and repeats the shot for a single to bring up his 50. 1538: Lee spears a yorker into Colly's legs and it's well dug out. Lee is vastly improved in this spell, far more intent. Colly gets one for a push into the covers. Lee has another shy at Bell's stumps after fielding from Bell - his dander is well and truly up just before tea. 1533: Warney's breather is over and he's wheeled back into the attack. Colly is beaten by a wicked leg-break, but does get one for a cut. Every time he plays that shot I think he's going to feather one to Gilchrist behind the stumps. 139-21533: Warney's breather is over and he's wheeled back into the attack. 1530: Lee fields his own bowling and has Bell scampering with a shy at the stumps. Lee follows up with a menacing smile and lick of the lips. The Aussie fast bowler is one of cricket's most engaging characters. A rare and jarring bit of violence amidst all this sedate play, Bell uppercutting Lee to the third man boundary. 138-21530: Lee fields his own bowling and has Bell scampering with a shy at the stumps. 1455: Another googly from Warne, two in two overs - not sure he bowled any in the whole of the 2005 series. Bell all at sea, coming forward before retreating into his crease. 1410: Warne out of the attack, Lee on. The Barmy Army warming up again which reminds me of a great quote by legendary England quick Harold Larwood: "A cricket tour to Australia would be delightful - if you were deaf." Lee's first ball is a rank half-bunger which Bell dispatches to the fine-leg boundary. Belly tucks Lee away for another couple and England are inching towards the gallon mark. Bell shoulders arms to Lee, and the ball isn't far away from his off-stick. Bit of rib-music from Lee, but Bell gets up on tip-toes and plays it into the ground. Lee slices Bell in two with the final ball and the ball races off the inside edge for four. Ten from the over. 83-21410: Warne out of the attack, Lee on. Belly then flicks Warne off his pads for one before Collingwood, not fazed by his dismissal in Brisbane, comes down the pitch and hits Warne over the top for three. 1300: Colly rocks back and cuts Warne away for one, Bell just making his ground, and England safely negotiate Warne's last over before lunch. 1254: Colly gets into a bit of a tangle against Warne and it's a maiden over. England's innings stagnating slightly, they could do with a couple of fours to be honest. Bell gets one to mid-wicket. 1245: Bell leaves another straightish one from Warne and the ball just misses off. Warne then fizzes one past the face of Bell's bat - he's having the Warwickshire man on toast at the moment. Bell uses his feet but Martyn saves the run at mid-wicket. Short leg in now and the pressure is mounting. Bell gets another chance to get runs from a Warne full-bunger, but plays it straight to Martyn again. 1241: Bell paddles Clark to backward point for one. Belly may have come of age as a Test cricketer this year but he still looks like a precocious 14-year-old promoted to play in his school's first Xl. Which begs the question: when he was a precocious 14-year-old promoted to play in his school's first Xl, did he look about seven? 1236: Bell leaves a straightish ball from Warne and nearly loses his off-stump. Looking positive, he then skips down the pitch and gets a single for a push to mid-off. 1228: This is old-school Test cricket ladies and gents, played at a very sedate pace. Cook rocks back and cuts Warne away, but gets no run. Cook, feet like Mark Ramprakash doing a Viennese waltz, skips down the pitch and turns Warne away for three.
