The attacker is also dead, reportedly killed by police.
Five people have been killed, including the shooter, KNVN-TV reported. Two children are among the injured. A gunman opened fire at the Rancho Tehama Elementary School near Red Bluff, California, killing at least four and injuring 10, including two children on Tuesday.
The shooting began “right about 8 am,” local time (1600 GMT), according to Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnson. “I know of at least three deaths,” Johnson told KNVN. “I am told at this point the suspected shooter is deceased by law enforcement bullets.” At a press conference Tuesday, Johnston said the gunman opened fire “without provocation or warning,” shooting at a woman who was dropping her kids off at the school.
A child in the backseat of the car was shot and suffered injuries that Johnston described as “not life threatening.” The woman driving the vehicle, however, sustained “very life threatening” injuries, Johnston said.
Coy Ferreira was also dropping off his daughter at the school when the shooting began. He said he ran into a classroom with 14 students when the gunman began shooting through the windows.
Ferreira said the gunfire lasted for 20-25 minutes, during which one of the young boys was hit in the foot and the chest.
“He's a really strong kid,” Ferreira told KRCR. “I didn't know he was shot for a good 30 minutes until I got up to walk to the office in the classroom and I saw he had bloody clothes. He started crying and I informed the teacher that he was shot.”
Johnston confirmed that the shooter was standing outside the school, firing “multiple times” into the school windows.
“It was very clear at the onset that we had an individual that was randomly picking targets,” Johnston said, according to KOAT.
Over 100 law enforcement officers have responded to the scene, the sheriff said. The Enloe Medical Center confirmed to KNVN that three children and one adult were evacuated from the scene. One of them required a medical helicopter. “The crazy thing is that the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines,” said the man, identified by the Searchlight as Brian Flint. “We made it aware that this guy is crazy and he’s been threatening us.”“The crazy thing is that the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines,” said the man, identified by the Searchlight as Brian Flint. “We made it aware that this guy is crazy and he’s been threatening us.”
Authorities have received reports that there was “a history of a neighborhood dispute involving who we believe the shooter is” but Johnston said he could not confirm. He added that they have also received reports that the suspect had been released on bond “for a previous incident,” possibly for stabbing a neighbor, but could not confirm those reports either.
