Poppi Worthington inquest: Coroner delivers findings Poppi Worthington inquest: Toddler 'was sexually abused'
(about 1 hour later)
A coroner is delivering his conclusion into toddler Poppi Worthington's death. Toddler Poppi Worthington was sexually abused by her father before she died, a coroner has ruled, finding her death was caused by asphyxia.
Senior coroner for Cumbria, David Roberts, heard conflicting evidence on whether the 13-month-old was sexually assaulted at her Barrow home, in 2012. Coroner David Roberts said Paul Worthington assaulted his daughter in his be, laid a cover over her and went to sleep.
In 2016, a family court judge said her father Paul Worthington "probably" sexually abused Poppi before her death. He said she died because her ability to breathe was compromised as a result of "an unsafe sleeping environment."
Mr Roberts said he drew "no adverse conclusions" from Mr Worthington's decision not to answer 252 questions as he gave evidence. The coroner said Mr Worthington's account did not "stand up to scrutiny".
During the three-week inquest at County Hall in Kendal, the coroner heard conflicting evidence from experts about whether the Poppi was molested before her death. During the three-week inquest at Kendal Coroner's Court, Poppi's father declined to answer 252 questions relating to the circumstances surrounding her death.
Latest updates as the coroner delivers his inquest findings Paramedics were called to the 13-month-old's home in Barrow, Cumbria, on 12 December 2012 and she was later pronounced dead at Furness General Hospital.
When declining to answer the majority of questions, Mr Worthington cited rules protecting witnesses from incriminating themselves. In January 2016 - as part of family court proceedings involving Poppi's siblings - a judge revealed his findings that Mr Worthington "probably" sexually assaulted his daughter shortly before her death.
However, Mr Roberts said he should not be criticised for exercising his rights. Mr Worthington has denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with any offence, with the Crown Prosecution Service saying there is insufficient evidence.
He said: "Paul Worthington was asked a number of questions about his previous accounts, aspects which are inconsistent.
"He was also asked about other matters which I felt required further explanation, for example why did he not take her downstairs with in accordance with the usual routine?
"Why did he leave her alone on the double bed? Why did he not place her back in the cot? Why did he remove her pyjama bottoms and what did he do with them?"
The coroner said Mr Worthington was "quite entitled to decline to answer the questions".
No prosecutions
Referring to the earlier family court hearings, Mr Roberts told the inquest: "I'm not bound by the findings of Judge Peter Jackson and have considered matters entirely afresh."
He also said he had agreed for Mr Worthington to have a "live link" for the rest of the hearing so he could hear what was being said, having concluded giving his evidence.
This is the second inquest into Poppi's death - the first in 2014 lasted less than eight minutes and concluded the cause of her death was "unascertained".
No-one has been prosecuted in connection with her death.
