Heathrow airport is dealing with a “serious accident” in which two vehicles collided. A man has died after a collision between two vehicles at Heathrow airport.
The incident occurred on the airfield on Wednesday morning and involved two members of staff, a spokeswoman for the UK’s busiest airport said. Police were called to the airport at 6am on Wednesday after the vehicles crashed on the taxiway.
A British Airways spokeswoman said: “We have apologised to customers for the delay to a small number of our flights this morning, following an incident involving two operational vehicles at the airport. We are doing all we can to ensure they will be able to depart as soon as possible.” A man in his 40s suffered serious injuries and was taken to a west London hospital where he later died. His next of kin have been informed but formal identification has yet to take place, the Metropolitan police said. Another man is believed to have suffered a broken shoulder.
The Heathrow spokeswoman said the airport was still trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident and whether anyone had been injured. The Met said it was investigating the incident but no arrests had been made. The Health and Safety Executive has also been informed.
The airport’s Twitter account initially said the incident was “not expected to cause any impact on journeys”. The spokeswoman later said the airport was working to minimise disruption. An airport spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that following a serious accident involving two vehicles on our airfield, an airport colleague has passed away. Our deepest condolences go to the family and friends affected by this accident. We will be fully cooperating with the police in the investigation which will follow.”
Many passengers complained that their travel plans had been affected. Alastair MacLeod tweeted that his flight had been delayed by two hours and 25 minutes. Several aircraft preparing to take off were held on the ground after the collision near Terminal 5. At least 20 British Airways flights failed to meet their scheduled departure time after the crash.
Ok although since the resched of this flight is 2h25m delayed I guess “no impact on journeys today” is optimistic A BA spokeswoman said: “We have apologised to customers for the delay to a small number of our flights this morning, following an incident involving two operational vehicles at the airport. We are doing all we can to ensure they will be able to depart as soon as possible.”
Another passenger, Steven Ross, tweeted: “It is impacting journeys departing B gates BA710 to Zurich delayed by +2 hrs and aircraft change required. Sending good wishes to injured staff.”
