It is understood two women who tried to help him were hit by a stolen taxi. Several people have been arrested and the police are examining the scene. Several people have been arrested, including four in connection with the murder of the 48-year-old.
The police said they want to hear from witnesses to the attack, and anyone who saw a beige taxi in Lisnahull Road which was later found burnt out.
"This was a vicious attack and a despicable crime, a family is having to deal with the loss of a loved one," said Supt Brian Williamson.
"We are determined to bring all those responsible for this heinous crime before the courts."
