Shot fired in post office robbery | Shot fired in post office robbery |
(about 14 hours later) | |
Three members of staff have been left badly shaken after an armed and masked gang fired a shot during robbery at a post office in Londonderry.
Three men entered the premises in Park Avenue in Rosemount on Wednesday afternoon and demanded money.
A shot was fired before the gang escaped in a white van, which was found burnt out a short time later.
An eyewitness said the robbers threatened a member of staff before fleeing empty-handed.
"One of the masked men said to one of the members of staff, 'I know where you're from and you're dead'," said the eyewitness.
"They just shouted that people were watching and the police were being phoned, and that's when they ran out.
"They must have panicked and run off," she said.
Local SDLP councillor Helen Quigley condemned the attack.
"Firing a live shot into the post office in a built up area at that time of the day when everybody was out going about their business and schoolchildren were going home from school was totally irresponsible and has to be condemned," she said.
"My sympathy goes to both the staff members and the owner of these premises, who has been a long time in business and has endured many many incidents like this.
"I just hope that for the sake of the community that he continues to serve the people in the manner in which he has done." |
