The brutal realism of this painting is disconcertingly modern. It looks as if it could have been painted by Courbet or Manet. In fact, it was painted in 17th-century Naples, where Ribera mixed Spanish severity with Caravaggio’s hard-hitting street style. His almost sensual lingering over the corpse of Christ is typical of the strange genius of this macabre visionary.• National Gallery, London. The brutal realism of this painting is disconcertingly modern.
