The brutal realism of this painting is disconcertingly modern. It looks as if it could have been painted by Courbet or Manet. In fact, it was painted in 17th-century Naples, where Ribera mixed Spanish severity with Caravaggio’s hard-hitting street style. His almost sensual lingering over the corpse of Christ is typical of the strange genius of this macabre visionary.• National Gallery, London. | The brutal realism of this painting is disconcertingly modern.
