BBC weather presenter Chris Fawkes said travel disruption was likely to continue into Saturday due to lying snow and ice. BBC weather presenter Helen Willetts said there was lying snow in many parts of the UK, and the ice risk remained high through Saturday night and into Sunday morning.
It will remain cold on Saturday but wintry showers will become increasingly confined to eastern coasts of the UK, leaving some spells of sunshine. Snow showers would ease in the later part of the day, but the weather is expected to turn very cold overnight, with experts predicting "the coldest night of the winter so far".
What warnings are in place? Temperatures even in cities such as London and Birmingham could fall to a "very unusual" -4 or -5, with -12 expected over the snowfields in Scotland.
There are yellow warnings for snow and ice covering northern Scotland, most of Northern Ireland, the eastern coast of England and the west coast of Wales until 12:00 GMT on Saturday. However Sunday will mark "a day of change" with milder air pushing in bringing heavy rain and some windy conditions in the coming week.
They warn of some snow showers, with heavier accumulations of up to 5cm (2in) possible in northern Scotland and up to 10cm (4in) over higher ground.
A separate warning for ice is in place for southern England until late morning.
Yellow warnings are issued for low level impacts, including some disruption to travel. People should check the latest forecast to see how they might be impacted.
