Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde has led the tributes to the men describing them as "four fine police officers". Their deaths bring to seven the total number of people who died on Northern Ireland's roads over the weekend.
On Sunday, Sir Hugh said: "This is an extremely sad day for the family, friends and colleagues who served with the police officers who lost their lives in this tragic incident in the early hours of this morning. Assistant Chief Constable Judith Gillespie said her "heart went out" to all the families who had lost loved ones as the result of the recent road crashes.
"The police family have lost four fine police officers in what are deeply tragic circumstances and our heartfelt condolences go out to their families. She said speculation about the cause of the crash which killed the four policemen was unhelpful at this stage.
"Our thoughts are with them as they struggle to come to terms with their loss." "There has been a lot of speculation about what did or didn't happen," she said.
"In my judgement, things happened so quickly that there was probably nothing they could do."
