The California Wildfires in Pictures The California Wildfires in Pictures
(about 16 hours later)
Two major wildfires continued to burn through dry vegetation at both ends of California on Wednesday, with the worst weather for wildfires strong, gusty winds and low humidity threatening the state and raising fears for the continued growth of the Kincade and Getty fires. The Kincade fire has so far burned more than 76,000 acres and destroyed 189 structures, and remains only 15 percent contained. A series of wildfires have torn across California over the last week, destroying hundreds of homes and forcing nearly 200,000 residents to evacuate. Millions were without power for several days.
Farther south, in the Los Angeles area, where a blaze known as the Getty fire has prompted the evacuation of more than 7,000 homes, Santa Ana winds strengthened. The Kincade fire, north of San Francisco, has so far burned more than 76,000 acres, decimated at least 266 structures and damaged 47 others as of Wednesday night. More than 4,200 firefighters continued to wage against that blaze, which on Thursday morning was 45 percent contained.
Gov. Gavin Newsom of California declared a state of emergency as the wildfire forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. More than 3,400 firefighters battled the blaze over the weekend, and more than 3 million people lost electricity because of forced power shutdowns. Farther south, in the Los Angeles area, firefighters continued to battle the Getty fire, which prompted the evacuation of more than 7,000 homes, and the Easy fire, which threatened the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, as Santa Ana winds strengthened.
