The California Wildfires in Pictures The California Wildfires in Pictures
(about 20 hours later)
Wildfires burned at both ends of the state of California on Monday. As the Kincade fire continued to rage in the heart of Sonoma County Monday morning, burning across more than 54,000 acres and doubling in size during a 24-hour period, another fire was developing in the Los Angeles area. The Getty Fire forced officials to seal off main interchanges of the 405, the nation’s busiest highway, and resulted in mandatory evacuations. Two major wildfires continued to burn through dry vegetation at both ends of California on Tuesday, with the worst weather for wildfires strong, gusty winds and low humidity threatening the state and raising fears for the continued growth of the Kincade and Getty fires. The Kincade fire grew overnight to 74,000 acres in the heart of Sonoma County, but was 15 percent contained Tuesday morning. And the National Weather Service posted “red flag” warnings for most of Northern California and much of Southern California, signaling that much of the state is still at risk for developing new fires.
Governor Gavin Newsom of California declared a state of emergency on Sunday as the wildfire forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes. More than 3,400 firefighters were battling the blaze over the weekend, and more than 3 million people lost electricity because of forced power shutdowns.
