Inquiries over two plane dramas Pilot's emergency landing relief
(about 7 hours later)
Two separate investigations are to be carried out after light planes got into difficulties in Londonderry and Tyrone on Sunday. A pilot has spoken of his terror at having to make an emergency landing at City of Derry Airport after reporting technical difficulties.
A pilot and his passenger escaped injury after their plane made an emergency landing near Dungannon. Steven Johnston, from Ballyclare, left the Ulster Gliding Club in Bellerena in a plane on Sunday afternoon.
The plane landed in a field and both men were able to get out quickly. Mr Johnston reported that the aircraft, a Robin DR30, was experiencing problems at about 1600 BST.
At City of Derry Airport the emergency services were on standby after the pilot reported a problem. That plane also landed safely. Emergency services were on standby as Mr Johnston landed the plane at about 1600 BST. He left unscathed.
The Dungannon alert happened shortly after noon. The light aircraft landed in a field close to the Pomeroy Road near the town. Mr Johnston said that waiting to land was the scariest part.
Local farmer, Kenny McClean, saw what happened. "I heard the plane coming over and you could hear it banging and clucking," he said. "When I landed it was just sheer relief.
"I ran out and saw it landing in the field just down the road a wee bit." "When I was loitering in the air waiting to come down it was almost worse than the landing itself," he added.
The two men were taken to Craigavon Area Hospital for treatment. Paul Walsh, a member of the Eglinton Flying Club, watched the plane come down to land.
It is understood that their injuries are not serious. "We all fly here ourselves and I must say he did very well," he said.

"It was a job well done, the way he managed to get it down."
