A 10-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after he was pulled from the River Bann in the village of Hilltown in County Down. | |
The child had been swimming with friends in the river when he got into difficultly and disappeared underwater. | |
Two firemen located the boy underwater and pulled him to safety. Medics worked to resuscitate him and he was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry. | |
It is understood the boy may have been underwater for about 20 minutes. | |
He is in a critical but stable condition and is expected to be taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children for specialist treatment. | |
His young friends are being comforted by relatives this evening. | |
The accident was reported at about 1650 BST. |
