A 10-year-old boy is critically ill in hospital after he fell into the River Bann in County Down. A 10-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after he was pulled from the River Bann in the village of Hilltown in County Down.
The accident happened at the Leitrim Road in Hilltown. The child had been swimming with friends in the river when he got into difficultly and disappeared underwater.
Police and other emergency services attended the scene and firefighters rescued the boy from the river. Two firemen located the boy underwater and pulled him to safety. Medics worked to resuscitate him and he was taken to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry.
The accident was reported at about 1650 BST on Wednesday. It is understood the boy may have been underwater for about 20 minutes.
He is in a critical but stable condition and is expected to be taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital for Sick Children for specialist treatment.
His young friends are being comforted by relatives this evening.
