Warning after teen's docks death
(about 2 hours later) | |
Police have warned young people of the dangers of swimming in deep cold water docks after the death of a teenager.
The body of Lyndon Twomey, 18, was recovered from Llewellyn's Quay in Port Talbot, on Sunday evening.
A rescue operation was launched after reports that he jumped into the water and did not resurface.
South Wales Police are investigating and warned people not to swim in the docks because of dangerous underwater objects.
Insp Karl Eenmaa said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Lyndon Twomey who lost his life in what appears to be a tragic accident.
"This tragedy highlights the dangers of swimming in the docks and I would plead with young people not to swim in this area."
It is far safer to swim at the beach which is only a very short distance away Insp Karl Eenmaa
He warned: "There is a large body of cold, deep water containing dangerous underwater objects.
"It is far safer to swim at the beach which is only a very short distance away.
"We have worked with the landowner, Associated British Ports, and will continue working with them to prevent such incidents occurring in the future."
The Mumbles, Port Talbot and Porthcawl lifeboats were involved in the search, along with an RAF rescue helicopter after Mr Twomey went missing in the afternoon.
Police divers found his body about two-and-a-half hours after they were alerted. |
