Detectives are investigating a motive for the shooting and are appealing for anyone who may have been in the Hollymount Park area late on Thursday and may have witnessed the attack. SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey who lives in the area condemned the shooting and suggested dissident republicans are to blame.
"People have no right to take the law onto themselves and shoot individuals.
"We have police and a judicial system where people can be apprehended and brought to justice in a democratic way," Mr Ramsey said.
"Dissident republicans have already shown their ability to cause disruption and damage.
"What we need to see from them now is an ability to move away from violence as the people of Derry want them to," he added.
