The body of an 11-year-old boy has been recovered from a pond near a canal in Greater Manchester.
Bolton Mountain Rescue team found the child's body in the muddy waters by Barton embankment near the Trafford Centre just after 2000 BST on Tuesday.
It is believed the boy, from Salford, had been playing with three friends before falling in the 10ft (3m) pond.
Geoff Seddon, of the mountain rescue team, said: "It was a tragic but rare incident."
Police officers and firefighters also conducted extensive searches of the area, after receiving the call at 1800 BST.
"We normally attend incidents like these about once or twice a year.
Police officers, firefighters and mountain rescue carried out searches
"It is dangerous to swim in open water unsupervised, but there are thousands of children every year jumping into lakes and reservoirs.
"They don't think they are going to die because they have seen friends do it so they think they're going to be OK.
"I am not sure of the circumstances surrounding this incident, we don't know whether they were wading, swimming or walking round the water," Mr Seddon added.
Police have confirmed that an investigation is under way, but are not treating the death as suspicious. |
