Sinn Fein MLA for North Belfast, Gerry Kelly, has condemned those who left the device.
"Those responsible are essentially attacking our children's education, their future, and their sense of safety," he said.
"They need to realise this and stop any such attacks immediately."
Alliance Party North Belfast representative Gerry Lynch said it was a "worrying development".
"To leave a suspicious device at a school beggar's belief," he said.
"This is just the latest in a series of incidents involving schools in North Belfast in recent months.
"I have no idea why anybody would want to attack any school but I would urge these people to stop disrupting the education of children."
