State-owned media in Somalia say government forces have killed at least 30 al-Shabab militants near Jamaame, south of the capital city Mogadishu. Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr's has faced challenges in her climate change mission but won over many women.
At least 10 insurgents were captured in what is said to have been a highly co-ordinated operation in villages around the town and along the River Jubba.
The mission is said to have been carried out with regional forces from Jubaland.
Operations against al-Shabab have intensified in southern Somalia where the al-Qaeda linked militants control many rural areas.
