Russian President Vladimir Putin joined his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and various other heads of state for a grand military parade in Beijing on Wednesday, after which Putin held talks with Kim and delegations from their two countries.   Russian President Vladimir Putin is speaking to reporters as his four-day visit to China nears its conclusion. Earlier, he attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and held talks with several global leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un.
Wednesday’s events follow the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, where Putin held a series of bilateral talks with Xi and the leaders of Mongolia, Slovakia, Pakistan, Serbia, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. Discussions focused on energy, trade, regional issues, and bilateral ties with Russia. Russia’s president also attended China’s commemorations of the 80th anniversary of imperial Japan’s defeat in World War II.
Moscow and Beijing described each other as strategic partners and pledged to deepen cooperation “without limits” across multiple sectors, including security, technology, finance, and research. Putin’s discussions centered on energy, trade, regional issues, and strengthening bilateral ties. During the visit, Moscow and Beijing signed more than 20 agreements on wide-ranging cooperation. Among them was a major deal to build the Power of Siberia-2 natural gas pipeline. In addition, China approved a trial program for visa-free travel for Russian nationals.
The press conference is taking place against the backdrop of continued tensions between Russia and the West over the war in Ukraine, as well as ongoing efforts by the United States to mediate the conflict.
