One passenger said that at the height of the problem, trains had been allowed into Cardiff two at a time. BBC journalist James Clarke experienced delays both going to and from Cardiff and was expecting to arrive back in Birmingham more than three hours later than planned.
She said passengers had been told that the delays were due to signalling problems after a cable was cut on Saturday night. He said the journey from Cardiff to Newport, normally covered in under 20 minutes, had taken nearly two hours.
When the train reached Newport, police passed cups of water into the train for passengers.
"Everyone was having a couple of sips and passing it on so everyone could get some," he aid.
"The trains are all absolutely packed. I have been standing all the way. There are lots of people having to go on to other places when this train gets back to Birmingham, so they may have to get taxis."
