Jurors found him guilty of the more serious offence of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, after hearing he deliberately ran Ms Johnson over, dragging her 65ft (about 20m) down the road. She had been preparing to take her son to school just before 0800 GMT when Richardson and Napper, who had been taking crack cocaine all night, got into the car.
'Two worlds collided'
At Reading Crown Court on Friday, Richardson was told he was being jailed for public protection.
Judge Stephen John told Richardson, a drug addict, if he did not address the "issues" that made him such a dangerous offender, then he would never be released from jail.
He said: "This was a completely selfish and pointless offence with the gravest consequences for an utterly innocent, decent, member of society.
"At the time of these offences, two worlds collided - that of an innocent family woman and that of two crack addicts concerned only with themselves."
Karen Napper admitted aggravated vehicle taking
During the trial, Ms Johnson described the moment the car hit her as it suddenly moved forward: "All I could hear was the engine and the accelerator and the power to the car was revving and then I felt this thud."
She described how she could see Richardson through the windscreen "frothing at the mouth" just before he drove at her.

Richardson was also sentenced to 20 months for aggravated vehicle taking and 18 months for dangerous driving, to run concurrently. Speaking outside court, Ms Johnson said: "It has been one year since the fateful morning that changed my life forever, but I am still here today and so grateful that justice has been done.
Napper was cleared of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and causing grievous bodily harm. "Now I can move on with my life and put this stressful episode behind me.
Judge Stephen John said she needed help with most of her daily and physical functions.
"A huge emotional strain has been put on her marriage. Her family life has been altered forever," he said.
