Ministers said plummeting temperatures would bring a continued risk of icy roads and pavements. The runway at Inverness Airport has been shut because of snow and ice. Passengers are urged to contact their airline to find out if flights are on.
Drivers experienced lengthy delays on the A9 after it was blocked for a time at Blackford in Perth and Kinross. ScotRail said services in and out of Glasgow Central have been reduced because of the severe conditions.
The same road was shut after a lorry jack-knifed south of Gleneagles at about 1120 GMT on Monday. Tayside Police said no-one had been injured in the incident, and the road was later reopened. Caledonian MacBrayne said technical problems with the Isle of Lewis ferry meant another vessel, the Clansman, has had to take over the Ullapool and Stornoway service while repairs are carried out.

Elsewhere, the A75 was closed between Stranraer and Newton Stewart because of "treacherous icy conditions" and the A90 was also blocked in Aberdeenshire by an accident near Fraserburgh. Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued warnings of widespread icy roads and heavy snow in the Highlands, Western Isles and the north east.
Both roads have since reopened. It said severe snow showers would affect parts of Moray, Nairn and the Inverness area.
Meanwhile, Caledonian MacBrayne said all sailings between Ullapool and Stornoway had been cancelled following technical problems with the Isle of Lewis ferry. Crews from Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service were called out to remove large icicles hanging from buildings in Grantown on Spey after they deemed a danger to pedestrians walking below.
Another vessel, the Clansman, is being brought in to take over the service on Tuesday while repairs are carried out. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has also warned people against venturing out onto frozen lochs after a man fell through ice while skating at Shawbost on Lewis on Sunday.
ScotRail said a number of services in and out of Glasgow Central had been reduced because of the severe weather conditions.

Temperatures fell to -16C in Tyndrum and to -14C at Tulloch Bridge in the Highlands on Sunday night.
