Freezing conditions close airport Highland's airport due to reopen
(about 12 hours later)
All flights to and from Inverness Airport have been cancelled following the freezing weather conditions. Inverness Airport was due to reopen after flights had to be cancelled because of freezing weather conditions.
Dozens of passengers had to spend Hogmanay in the city after snow and ice closed the airport, affecting hundreds of travellers. Hundreds of passengers had to alter their travel plans on Hogmanay and New Year's Day when airport bosses said conditions were not safe to operate.
About 16 passengers opted to stay in the airport terminal to bring in the new year with champagne and pizza. It was hoped the airport could be reopened at about midday on Saturday.
A spokeswoman said the airport had been closed all day on Friday due to the frozen runway. Passengers have been advised to check the airport's website before travelling and also to contact the airline they booked their flights with.
Passengers have been advised to check the airport's website for further information.
The spokeswoman said: "Staff worked throughout the night to keep the runways clear and have worked throughout the day to try and clear the ice.
"Unfortunately due to ongoing freezing conditions the airport has had to close from 3pm today."
