Traffic queues of up to six miles built up in all directions approaching the Almondsbury Interchange. All lanes have reopened but traffic is moving very slowly around the Almondsbury Interchange and is also causing delays on the M32 into Bristol.
The Highways Agency advises drivers on the M5 south to take the M4 west to junction the M49, then back onto the M5 at junction 18. It is believed freezing temperatures overnight caused problems with the tarmac which did not set properly.
Some lanes have reopened but traffic remains heavily congested and delays are expected for some time. Drivers are warned to expect disruption on all three motorways and to avoid the area if possible.
