A police spokeswoman said there were no initial reports of any injuries following the explosion. A detective said it was "a sheer miracle no-one was injured or killed". Police were evacuating the area when it went off at about 2240 GMT.
A car was abandoned close to the gates of the courthouse at about 2200 GMT on Monday. Police were evacuating the area when the bomb went off. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after 2200 GMT following reports of a suspicious car near the court.
People in the city reported hearing a loud bang and smoke could be seen in the area around the building at New Street, near the city centre. Bomb warnings were also received by a hospital and a number of businesses in the city. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

Police have appealed for anyone who saw a suspicious vehicle in the area to contact them. "Our investigations and examination of the area will be full and extensive, and I would appeal to anyone with information, no matter how small, to contact detectives at Newry."
